Having done linkspams of last year’s fall TV season, movies and comics, games seemed like a solid follow-up… which is why I started drafting this post several months ago. The Center is currently eating my life, and will for at least another month, so I’m giving up. Here are your links. (And yes, I still have a ton of links to go. A little on the ever-popular topic, female armour:
- College Humor starts us off on a funny note with Female Armor Sucks.
- Becky Chambers’ Form Follows Function: Dressing Your Video Game Characters, and Other Concerns focuses on clarifying why certain female characters’ clothing is objectionable, leading her to conclusions about how designers can do it better – for everyone.
In more general gaming news:
- Over at Game Informer, Adam Biessener dissects Prime World in Rethinking The Boundary Between Social And Hardcore Gaming, a game that uses its ties to various social-networking sites to limit characters’ options based on their players’ gender.
- A guy whose been gaming for ages takes on the intersection of violence and sex in games with “Did she just money-shot herself with his neck-blood?”, an article you should read because it’s interesting, but also because of the title 🙂
- Matt Simmons is a sys admin, not a game designer, but his Seriously, stop with the booth babes is relevant for gaming conferences, too.
- Back in 2008, Tracey John did a series of articles with interviews about race in gaming. I haven’t read all of them yet, but if they’re all like Newsweek’s N’Gai Croal On The ‘Resident Evil 5’ Trailer: ‘This Imagery Has A History’ – i.e. thoughtful and fair discussions of complicated topics – they’re worth a little of your time.
